Aaron Hickey | The next Scottish sensation?

Scottish football has been creating some of the finest defenders in recent history. Left backs especially, world class talent with plenty of youth finding their way through to complement the list. Bologna Football Clubs left back, Aaron Hickey has been fighting his way through the pecking order to join this list. The Glasgow nattive has been impressing Italians in the Serie A with his incredible and mature game of football since joining from Hearts F.C. in September 2020.

Aaron started his football journey with the youth team of the club he would eventually make his professional debut for, Hearts of the Midlothian Football Club. Playing for their youth development programme until he decided to move to Celtic in 2014. Playing four seasons for ‘The Bhoys’ until in 2018, Aaron decided it was best to go back to Hearts. Playing just one season in the youth side until he made his first debut in May 2019 against Aberdeen in a 2-1 loss.

Hickey would go on to score his first professional goal the season after in the Edinburgh derby. Helping Hearts secure the 2-1 win away to Hibernian. Aaron would go on to make 22 appearances that season and attract attention from plenty of big name clubs including Bayern Munich, Lyon and Aston Villa. He later would go on to pick Bologna due to the club family feel and the promise to be used more in first team games.

Aaron would go on to join Bologna FC in September of 2020 and make his debut four days later in a 4-1 win against Parma FC. Unfortunately he would pick an injury in March of 2021 which would restrict him to just 12 appearances. But these 12 games would help Arron make the shortlist of the 2021 Golden Boy award.

The Scot was shortly back impressing the italians in action this season following his injury by netting five times, making one assist in 34 appearances this season. He has been so impressive it has earnt him 3 appearances with the senior Scottish national team.

With lighting up in Serie A this has caused the 19 year old a lot of attention. Milan have not been quiet in their approach to wanting to bring him to the San Siro. He has also attracted the attention of the Premier league. Tottenham, Brentford, Newcastle and Arsenal have all apparently been keeping tabs on the youngster. With the season winding down and the transfer market opening around the corner, will Bologna be able to keep the young superstar in the making at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara?
